If you’re rolling into Grimmer Motors for a WOF in Hamilton, or even just swinging by from places like Cambridge, Horotiu, or Te Awamutu, you’ll know by now — passing the Warrant of Fitness isn’t just about what’s under the bonnet. Seats matter heaps. After all the stop-start action on Ulster Street, the bumpy bits out in Gordonton, and those speed humps near Chartwell, your car’s seats cop a hiding over time. Here’s how to keep ‘em sweet for your next WOF, straight from what we see in the workshop most weeks.
1. Check Your Seat Belts, Always
Start with the obvious — seat belts. Doesn’t matter if you’re buckling up in a Mazda Axela or a Nissan Presage, those belts have to work properly. Give ‘em a tug, make sure they lock up, look for fraying or dodgy webbing, and check the buckle. If you spot any dramas, don’t muck around. Get them repaired or replaced. More than one customer has been caught out at the VTNZ. If you want the technical stuff, check out this seat belt WOF advice.
2. Sort Out Upholstery Rips and Tears
Hamilton drivers aren’t shy with their work boots, groceries, or football boots, and after a few years, those old Toyota Avensis or Skoda Octavia seats can look a bit worse for wear. Even a wee tear in a seat can get attention at a WOF. Grab a repair kit for little jobs, or if your Subaru Forester seat is properly shredded, let us handle the bigger repairs. Decent upholstery means more comfort and keeps your car looking half presentable. Get more details on fixing rips here: upholstery repair.
3. Double-Check Seat Adjustments
Seen it all — drivers can’t move their seat forward in a Honda Stream, or the recliner jams in a Peugeot 308 after one too many Macca’s drive-thrus. If it struggles, makes crunchy noises, or jams, fix it. Not just for comfort (though you don’t want to be stuck on River Road in peak hour cramp), you need to get the right driving position, especially if you share the car. For a few ergonomic pointers, have a look here.
4. Have a Good Nosey at the Seat Structure
Once, we had a BYD Atto 3 in from Tamahere with a seat wobble that would make you seasick. Any wobbles, clunks, or dodgy movement in springs means the frame could be cracked. That sort of thing can get flagged at your WOF Hamilton check. Don’t risk it — if it’s loose, it needs a proper fix. The seat’s your anchor if you have a prang. If you want the nitty-gritty on seat structure safety, have a read. Curious about getting it checked? More info here.
5. Watch for Rust and Corrosion
With all those foggy Hamilton mornings and our wild seasons, rust loves to grow under seat mounts — especially if you’ve got older Euro stuff like a VW Golf or the classic BMW 318i. Bit of surface rust? Get onto it before it eats through the base. If your seat’s getting a bit wobbly, corrosion might be the culprit and could fail your WOF. For tips on chasing rust, check out this article.
6. Keep Your Seat Covers and Trim Tight
Everyone loves a good seat cover, but if it’s slipping off your Suzuki Swift or the Mondeo, it can be a nuisance, even a hazard. We’ve seen more than a few pop loose on Avalon Drive and end up caught under pedals. Keep ‘em tight and tidy. It also looks better for the WOF. Some advice on taking care of your car’s interior here and here.
7. Give the Seats a Decent Clean
Alright, a messy seat might not directly fail your WOF, but it’s always a sign the car’s looked after (or not). Grit and crumbs grind into the fabric, especially after weekends at the Raglan beach or footy in Ngaruawahia. Regular vacuuming means they last longer and you’re not embarrassed if you have to give someone a lift. More on keeping things clean here.
