Cambelt / Timing Belt Replacement

Cambelts should be changed every 100,000km. When was yours last changed?

A cambelt (or timing belt) is designed to drive your valve train assembly. It keeps your engine in time with other engine components, stopping the valves and pistons from colliding with each other. If the cambelt is not replaced at regular service intervals it could cause serious damage to your car.

Because the cambelt is made of rubber, it can deteriorate over time and eventually break. If this happens, the engine can be severely damaged, as the valves will no longer be synchronized with the crankshaft, causing them to collide with the pistons. In most cases, an engine replacement is necessary if this happens.

Replacing your cambelt every 100,000 km will reduce the risk of it causing serious engine damage.

What do we replace?Cambelt equipment

Although it is ultimately up to you, there are several important components that we recommend should be replaced when changing a vehicle’s cambelt. These include:
  • The water pump
  • The camshaft seal
  • The crankshaft seal
  • The belt tensioner
  • The cambelt idler
It is recommended to replace these components at the same as the cambelt / timing belt. The main reason for this is that the majority of the labour needed to replace the components will already have been done when the cambelt is being replaced. If the cambelt is replaced and one of these parts fails shortly after, the car will need to be disassembled again, resulting in an expensive bill. We replace these parts as a form of preventative maintenance, to save you money over time.
Please be aware that lower price cambelt replacement estimates may not include some of these parts that should be replaced.

Signs of cambelt due for replacement:

Here are some signs that your cambelt may need to be replaced:

  • High mileage: Most car manufacturers recommend replacing the cambelt at a certain mileage interval, typically around 100,000 km. If your car has reached this mileage without having the cambelt replaced, it may be time to replace it.
  • Cracks or wear on the cambelt: The cambelt is made of rubber and can deteriorate over time, becoming brittle and cracked. If you can visually inspect the cambelt and see cracks or signs of wear, it’s probably time to replace it.
  • Whining noises: If you hear a high-pitched whining noise coming from the front of the engine, it could be a sign that the cambelt is worn and needs to be replaced.

Booked the ol' Fuga in for a service this week. I dropped it off early to take advantage of the free clean and asked if I could have it ready at 3 pm. The service went well and they... pointed out things that would need attention in the future. I like the introduction of the vehicle service and repair log book. Which has all my previous services and fix ups recorded in it. And the Fuga was freshly cleaned and ready at 3pm, like they said. Thanks Team
