Keeping your wiper blades in decent nick is a simple way to make your drives around Hamilton safer and a whole lot less stressful — especially when the weather does its usual Waikato thing and chucks it down on your way to Te Awamutu or Morrinsville, or the fog rolls in on Cobham Drive at 6am. If you’re not sure whether your wiper blades are past their best, here’s five dead-easy ways to tell, based on what we see every week in the workshop.
1. Streaks and Smears on the Windscreen
First thing, have a squiz after you’ve run the wipers heading up Cambridge Road in a bit of drizzle. Seeing long streaks, smears, or patchy clearing? That’s usually because the rubber edge on the blade has gone hard or split. It happens a lot — whether you drive a Honda Fit from Christchurch, a Suzuki Swift you’ve had for years, or even something like a BYD Atto 3 that’s only done a couple of Hamilton winters. Streaking means the water isn’t getting wiped off properly, which can be a real headache on those stormy State Highway 26 runs.

2. Squeaking or Chattering Noises
You know that sound: wipers flapping and squeaking louder than your mate complaining about speed bumps on Peachgrove Road. If your Mazda Demio’s wipers are chattering or making a racket, it usually means the rubber is aging — or maybe even dried out from a hot Waikato summer when you parked up near The Base. Anytime you get that annoying noise, it’s time to think about swapping them out. A sticky, noisy wiper is not just a nuisance, it’s a sign your blade’s nearly done its dash. If you reckon your air conditioning might be drying the blades too, have a look at Air Conditioning Maintenance for a few handy tips.
3. Cracks or Damage on the Blades Themselves
Give the blades a proper once-over while you’re topping up your washer fluid or waiting outside Chartwell Shopping Centre. If you spot splits, missing bits of rubber, or the edge looks all chewed up, don’t muck about — grab some new blades. Doesn’t matter if you drive a Toyota Wish, Suzuki S-Cross, or one of those cool Peugeot 3008 SUVs we see a bit of now. If the rubber’s cracked, it can’t clear the glass properly, and you’ll be working your wipers double-time on every wet trip up to Ngaruawahia. While you’re at it, worth keeping an eye on other parts too, especially if you want to avoid things like engine damage.
4. Struggling When It’s Bucketing Down
We get plenty of cars in after a proper Waikato storm, when the wipers have just not kept up. If you’re pushing through heavy rain on Greenwood Street and still can’t see, even on the fastest setting, your wiper blades are likely on their last legs. Good blades should keep your vision clear, even when it’s chucking it down or you’re stuck behind a spray-happy truck on Ruakura Road. Need more on wet weather tips? 5. Blades Sliding or Skipping Across the Glass
If your wipers are skipping or bouncing like a dodgy rugby pass, that’s another classic sign they’re not making good contact with the screen. Happens heaps on older Skodas or the odd Ssangyong Korando and even on newer hybrids like a Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV if the blades get knocked out of line. Sometimes it’s just worn rubber, other times they’re fitted a bit off after a DIY job. Either way, it needs sorting before the weather turns gnarly. Got another issue with your wipers? Might be time to swing by for a proper windscreen wiper repair.
