Most of us in Hamilton spend a fair bit of time driving — whether that’s fighting the slow crawl on Te Rapa Road, hitting a pothole in Dinsdale, or sprinting off the lights on Ulster Street. Wherever you’re off to (maybe even up to Ngaruawahia or down to Cambridge), the one thing you want working right every single time? Your brakes. Doesn’t matter if you’re in a Honda Fit, a Toyota Aqua, or a late-model Peugeot from Morrinsville — brakes aren’t one of those things you leave to luck. Here’s what we see day to day in the workshop, and what you can do to keep your brakes in top nick.

1. Keep an Eye on Your Brake Pads

If you’re hearing squeaks, grinding, or you’ve noticed it’s been a while since anyone checked your brake pads, better take a look. Hamilton’s a lot of stop-start — merging onto Peachgrove Road in thick traffic, or slogging up the hill to Rototuna. Pads wear faster with all that. Most manuals say to check your brake pads every 20,000km or so, but honestly, if your car’s mostly in town, don’t be surprised if it’s sooner. If you’re not sure what you’re looking at, bring it to Grimmer Motors — we’ll let you know how they’re holding up.

2. Don’t Ignore Your Brake Fluid

Seriously, it’s not just there for decoration. Brake fluid works extra hard around here — hot summers in Hamilton East, foggy winter mornings over in Gordonton — that all messes with it. If it’s too low, or you see it’s turned a dodgy brown colour, it’s time for a top-up or full flush. Low brake pedal feel or sluggish stops can come down to cruddy fluid. Your safest bet? Get it checked before your next roadie to Raglan. Need help? We sort brake fluid, no worries, just ask one of our techs.

3. Make Sure Your Brake Rotors Are Sweet

Ever felt your steering wheel shake when you press the brakes coming down Normandy Ave? Could be your rotors are warped (common if you’re panic-stopping, or if your car’s been sitting for a while in freezing winter). Also happens more often if you drive a heavier Euro — seen it plenty with Volvo V50s and even a few older Fords and Mazdas in from Huntly. During a pad change or WOF in Hamilton, get the rotors looked at too. If they’re looking rough, we’ll give you good advice whether they just need a skim or swap-out.

4. Listen to Warnings — Don’t Brush Them Off

Lots of cars now — even older Subaru Outbacks or Suzuki Swifts — have that brake light on the dash, or a blaring beep when things aren’t right. If you see warning lights, or if your car starts pulling to one side around Nawton’s roundabouts, or you feel any pulsing, don’t ignore it. Getting onto brake warnings early often saves a bigger, more expensive headache later. Round here, we see people ride it out and end up with chewed-up rotors or worse. Trust your gut — if it feels off, it probably is.

5. Don’t Skip the Pro Servicing

Some things you can DIY — brakes aren’t really one of them. Even if you check your own pads, you might miss something a trained eye at Grimmer Motors will spot. We work on everything: Nissan Leafs from Tamahere, Kia Seltos in from Cambridge, the odd Renault Clio from Taupiri. Our techs know what fails on each car, and we’ve got the latest kit to catch sneaky faults — great for peace of mind before a WOF or long trip.
