1. Don’t Forget About Your Hybrid Battery

Unlike the ordinary 12V battery in a Corolla or Suzuki Swift, your hybrid’s big battery is running the show — especially crawling through the Claudelands bridge traffic with all those red lights. We see everything from Nissan Leafs to Kia Niros and older Honda Fits come through the shop, and if there’s one thing we always tell people, it’s to keep on top of battery health. If the battery’s getting tired, your dash might light up like a Christmas tree, the car’ll feel sluggish, or your fuel economy will go out the window.

Hybrid brakes are a bit clever — especially in city traffic around Rototuna or over all those speed bumps in Hillcrest. When you touch the pedal, the system grabs some of that energy and pumps it back into the battery. But here’s the thing: it means brakes wear in odd ways. We’ve had a Subaru XV hybrid in where the discs glazed up ‘cos they didn’t get used much — all that regen braking does the work, so the normal bits get neglected.
