Ever hopped in your Mazda Demio or maybe your Honda CR-V, ready for another day on Ulster Street or heading out to Te Awamutu, and all of a sudden you spot one of those pesky dashboard warning lights? Happens all the time. When you’re due for a WOF in Hamilton, those lights aren’t just annoying — they can actually stop you passing. Seen all sorts come through the workshop at Grimmer Motors: busy Mums from Rototuna, tradies from Cambridge, students with their Toyota Aqua hybrids, all with some mysterious dash light glowing. Here’s a few tips from people who see this every day — making sure you’re sorted before your next car service or WOF Hamilton check.
Airbag Warning Light — Don’t Ignore This One
Had a lady with a VW Tiguan pop in last week, running errands down Peachgrove Road — airbag light’s on and she’s worried about the school run. If that airbag light’s on, it can mean there’s something wonky in your car’s main safety system. If you need a bit more detail, it could be anything from a dodgy sensor to a wiring fault.
What should you do? Don’t muck about, just get it checked. Come in, our techs can run a scan and see exactly what’s going on. Sorting it quick means you’re not risking getting caught out if some clown suddenly slams on the brakes in the morning Claudelands traffic.
-
Airbags might not go off in a crash if there’s a fault — pretty serious, eh?
-
Sorting it keeps you, your friends, and your family that bit safer.
-
You’ll breeze through your WOF, no dramas.

Brake System Warning Light — Absolutely Get This Looked At
Another regular: a gent came in from Morrinsville, his Hyundai i30’s brake light kept popping up after he braked on a rutted bit of SH1 after a rainstorm. Turns out it was just worn pads, but it could have been low brake fluid too. Brake system warnings aren’t just random — they mean something’s not right, and you don’t want to muck about.
What should you do? Straight up, get us to check the lot: the pads, fluid levels, the whole brake system. One of our techs will get it up on the hoist and sort it, whether it’s a Subaru Outback with a leaking line or a Nissan Serena needing new pads.
-
If your brakes go, you won’t just fail your WOF — you might not stop in time for a stray scooter on Mill Street.
-
Spotting it early means a cheaper fix, too.
-
Good brakes keep you safe on those Hamilton hills, especially when it’s wet or icy in winter.
ABS Warning Light — Essential for Wet, Slippery NZ Roads
This one’s huge around here, especially in autumn mornings when the dew makes Cambridge Road greasy. The ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) light pops up when the system’s not working right. Had a guy roll in with a Peugeot 308 from Te Kowhai, ABS light on — bad sensor, easy fix, much safer now. For some cars, especially hybrids, sometimes it’s a sensor or a module playing up — we see it often and can sort ABS repairs easy as.
What should you do? Don’t just hope it goes away — pop in and we’ll get it scanned. Sometimes it’s just a dusty sensor, but you don’t want to risk losing control on a wet roundabout off Greenwood Street.
-
ABS can help you keep control if you have to jump on the brakes suddenly.
-
Staying on top of it means you can handle potholes, speed bumps, and all the usual Hamilton surprises.
-
And, of course, it’s a must-pass for your WOF.
