Failed Your WOF in Hamilton Because of Rust?

Alright, so you’ve just had your car in for a Warrant of Fitness (WOF) check here in Hamilton. Maybe you were hoping for a quick pass before heading down Peachgrove Road or popping over to pick up the kids in Rototuna, but instead, you got a sheet with “rust” circled. Typical, aye? Rust turns up just like an old mate you really weren’t expecting.

Now, not all rust is equal, and trust me, after working on everything from little Nissan Cubes to that random Citroën C4 Picasso, every vehicle seems to cop it at some point, especially with the way the weather changes here. Warm, dry summer running over to The Base, then the foggy, wet mornings around Cambridge—good recipe for rust.

Surface Rust – The Usual Suspect

For most people who fail a WOF over rust, it’s just surface stuff. Might look like bubbling or flaky orange patches on your chassis, maybe down under the doors or near the jack points. All those speed bumps they’ve put in on Ulster Street can give your Mazda Demio a decent scrape underneath, and next thing, paint chips off, water gets in, and here comes that rust.

Don’t panic if it’s just on the surface. You don’t need a panel beater for light rust. We can sort that right here at the workshop. What we’ll do is strip it back, get rid of all the flaky bits, treat it with a rust primer, and then slap on some paint so it stays tidy. Had a Toyota Blade in just last week, lady from Tamahere, same deal. In by morning, she was back on the road that arvo—sorted. Your car looks better, holds value, and most importantly, you’re safe.

When Rust Gets Serious

Now, if the rust has been chewing away at things for a while (think when a Mercedes GLA comes in with holes in the floor, couple from Morrinsville, couldn’t see daylight through their footwell anymore), that’s problematic rust. At that point, it can compromise your car’s strength, and you don’t mess with stuff like the chassis, brake lines, or shock towers. Around here, with all the stop-start around Hamilton East, having something snap—nightmare.

If your WOF inspector wants a Panel Beaters Written Report, you’ll need to get a specialist in. But if it’s just failed for surface rust (and that’s the majority of cases we see), we’re your crew. Dangerous rust spots are almost always flagged on your check sheet, so if you’re unsure, bring your car in before you get back out on the expressway or head over to Ngaruawahia.
