Why are the rear reflectors important?
In New Zealand, it is a requirement that vehicles are fitted with at least one rear reflector. This ensures that the vehicle remains clearly visible at all times.
Rear reflectors are designed in a way that the light from headlights reflects clearly off them. This significantly improves the visibility of your car at night. The reason these reflectors are required as well as tail lights is because they help other drivers to see your car when it is parked with the lights turned off.
Have you failed your Warrant of Fitness for rear reflectors?
There are several reasons your car can fail its Warrant of Fitness due to rear reflectors. These include:
- Damage or cracks – When exposed to an impact, a rear reflector may crack. This can result in some or all of the reflector falling off. When part of the reflector is missing, it can reduce the visibility of the car at night, resulting in a potential Warrant of Fitness failure.
- Fading – Over time, the reflective material can fade. This results in reduced visibility at night. If the reflective material has faded to a point where it is not visible from 100 metres, it may need to be replaced in order to pass a Warrant of Fitness.
- Reflector missing or falling off – Sometimes, a reflector is held on by heavy-duty glue. Exposure to the elements can cause this glue to lose its effectiveness, eventually leading to the reflector falling off.
