About parking sensors:New parking sensors Hamilton

Parking sensors are a helpful safety feature in many modern vehicles. A good set of parking sensors can significantly reduce your chances of collisions and damage, especially when reversing or making complex manoeuvres. When a parking sensor detects a nearby object, it will beep. As you get closer to the object, it will beep more rapidly, warning you that you are getting close.

Learn more about how parking sensors work >

There are two main types of parking sensors. These are ultrasonic and electromagnetic sensors.

Ultrasonic Sensors:

Ultrasonic sensors work by emitting high-frequency sound waves which reflect off nearby objects. The parking sensor then detects the reflected sound waves and uses them to calculate how far away an object is.

Electromagnetic Sensors:

Electromagnetic parking sensors are a little more complex than ultrasonic sensors. As their name suggests, they create an electromagnetic field that is used to judge distance. When an object enters the field, it will cause a disruption in voltage. This disruption is detected by the sensor and used to gauge distance from objects.

Causes of parking sensors not working:

Faulty installation – The leading cause of problems in aftermarket parking sensors is incorrect installation. Getting your parking sensors installed by a professional will ensure that they function correctly.

Dirty sensor – Sometimes, dirt and other contaminants can block the sensor, reducing its effectiveness. A simple clean will usually fix this problem.

Faulty wiring – Sometimes, the wiring between your car’s parking sensors and dashboard can become damaged. This can lead to no electricity passing from the sensor to the rest of your car.

Intermittent beeping noises:

With an aftermarket installation, the parking sensor may start to beep for no reason. This can be caused by the car’s central computer testing the continuity of the brake lights or turn signals. Since the parking sensor is often wired to the same power source, the small amount of electricity fluctuation can affect the parking sensor, causing it to beep for no reason.

A solution for this is to have a relay installed. This will prevent these electrical currents from reaching the sensor.
