Does your fuel pump need repairing?

What does your vehicle’s fuel pump do?

Fuel pump

The fuel pump is an important part of any petrol or diesel vehicle’s fuel system. A fuel pump transfers fuel from a car’s fuel tank to its engine, allowing the engine to ignite the fuel. A properly functioning fuel pump will create the right amount of pressure to ensure that the correct amount of fuel is being transferred to the engine. If a fuel pump is damaged, it may starve the engine of fuel, hindering your car’s ability to run properly

Signs of a malfunctioning fuel pump:

1. Loss of Power:

If your fuel pump is damaged, it will often result in a loss of power in your vehicle, particularly when traveling at high speeds or climbing hills. This will result in the vehicle suddenly losing speed or failing to accelerate.

2. Surging:

Surging is when the vehicle suddenly jolts or accelerates without the driver doing anything. This can often be caused by either a damaged fuel pump or fuel filter.

3. Vehicle Shaking while Accelerating:

Upon accelerating from a complete stop, you may notice that your vehicle shakes. This can be due to the fuel pump not being able to provide the vehicle with enough fuel.

4. Vehicle not Starting:

If the fuel pump is badly damaged, your car may be unable to start. In this case, you will hear the car attempt to ignite but fail due to little or no fuel entering the engine.

5. Engine Running Lean

If the fuel pump can’t deliver enough fuel to the engine to keep the engine’s air/fuel ratio at 14.7 to 1, then the engine may start to run lean. Lean Air / Fuel ratio mixtures can also cause the engine to run hotter than normal, which can cause mechanical damage to the engine’s parts.

6. Engine Misfiring

Another side effect of the engine running lean is that the Air / Fuel mixture may not burn correctly, causing engine cylinder misfires. Left unchecked misfires are extremely bad for your engine, the environment and your fuel bill.

7. Increased Exhaust Emissions

Lean Air / Fuel mixtures tend to make the engine run hotter increasing Nitrous Oxides which is a very harmful climate change/greenhouse gas.
