About automatic gearbox replacement and servicing:
An automatic gearbox (or auto transmission) is an important and complex part of your car’s power train. It is used to change the speed and torque of vehicle according to variety of road and load condition. Unlike a manual gearbox, it does not rely on user input to make these changes. As well as changing gears, the automatic gearbox also allows your car to shift into park, neutral or reverse.
One disadvantage of an automatic transmission is that it is more prone to problems in comparison to a manual transmission. When part of the automatic gearbox fails, your cars driveability will be affected.
The majority of transmission problems can be avoided by keeping an eye on your car’s transmission fluid and keeping it regularly serviced. If it leaks, or fails to lubricate the transmission system, the parts inside your gearbox will overheat and wear very quickly. If not attended to quickly, this can result in an expensive repair bill. A transmission fluid flush should keep your auto transmission working correctly.
How does an automatic transmission work?
Causes of automatic gearbox problems:
There are several things that can go wrong with the automatic transmission. Below are a few of the most common problems:
- Low / overheating transmission fluid
- Clogged transmission filter
- Worn gears and other transmission components
- Damaged gearbox linkages
Symptoms of automatic transmission problems:
Trouble shifting gears – Your car’s auto transmission may struggle to change gears if the transmission fluid is not reaching the right places. This can be identified by sluggish performance, high RPMs and loud engine noise while accelerating.
Grinding noises – A failing transmission may produce grinding noises when it is switching gears. This problem will likely get worse over time, meaning you should have the car examined as soon as possible.
Jolt when changing gears – A failing automatic transmission / gearbox can jolt between gear changes either when changing up or down in gears automatically.
Car won’t engage quickly – If you notice delays when putting your car in drive or reverse, there could be a problem with your transmission. This is often caused by old transmission fluid which has gone thick.
Burning smell – A burning smell is always a reason to be concerned. When your transmission fluid loses its lubricating properties, the transmission system will become hot, resulting in overheating and a strong burning smell.
Slipping out of gear – A failing transmission can cause your car to slip to lower gears. As well as affecting your car’s performance, this can also affect your safety especially at higher speeds.
Engine wont start – A failing or miss adjusted automatic gearbox inhibitor switch may prevent your cars engine from starting sometimes or all the time.
