1. Flush and Refill Your Radiator Regularly
Righto, first thing — your radiator’s not invincible. Over time, coolant turns a bit manky, especially if you’re driving the kids between Hillcrest and The Base every day or tackling motorway runs to Cambridge. Old coolant can get a bit sludgy and start blocking things up, or worse, corrode what’s in there.
We get heaps of Suzukis and Peugeots in with this exact issue — you don’t notice anything til you’re halfway up Horsham Downs Road and the temp gauge starts creeping up. Do a flush now and then — drain out the old stuff, run some flush through, top up with fresh coolant. Makes a massive difference. Here’s a link on why a cooling system flush is such a good call.
2. Check Your Hoses for Leaks and Cracks
Next up — hoses. Doesn’t matter if it’s a Toyota Estima or a Citroën C4, they all use rubber hoses that get brittle from age, stop-start city driving, and hot summers stuck on Te Rapa Road. Hoses split or start leaking, your coolant vanishes and your engine’s left buggered.
We’ve had plenty of customers from Morrinsville and Raglan who thought a splatter under the car was just rain. A quick squeeze — if the hoses feel crunchy, spongy, or you spot a split — just replace them. Sorted.
3. Keep the Radiator Fins and Grill Clean
Rosedale’s full of leaves, and every second car we see in winter’s got all sorts of gunk jammed in the radiator fins. Plus, driving over potholes out by Rototuna tends to flick up a surprising load of muck. If your Honda Odyssey’s overheating, have a peek at the front.
We clean heaps of radiators in the workshop using a soft brush or a careful blast of air. Just don’t bend the fins or you’ll do more harm than good. Quick tidy up means the airflow’s sweet and there’s no risk of things getting too hot under the collar. If you want the science on it, check this page about the importance of cleaning your radiator.
4. Check Coolant Levels Often
It’s the simplest thing — but most folks forget. Especially during those foggy Hamilton mornings when you’re late for work, or after a mad rush up Wairere Drive. If the coolant drops too low, you’re asking for trouble (and potentially a cracked head).
We see it in everything from Nissan X-Trails to SsangYongs — pop the bonnet, have a quick look. If it’s low, top up with the right coolant. Don’t just use water out of the tap, especially not in winter.
5. Use the Coolant Your Car Actually Needs
Every brand’s got their own special brew. Don’t go mixing green, pink, or blue coolants in your Subaru or Kia — you’ll just end up with brown muck and more corrosion than you bargained for. Stick with what the manual says. If you’re not sure, just ask one of our techs. It’s an easy way to keep your cooling system happy. If you want to nerd out, here’s more on using the right coolant for your car.
6. Check Your Radiator Cap
Honestly, you wouldn’t believe how many BMWs and even a few Isuzu ELF trucks we’ve seen cooked by something as simple as a dodgy radiator cap. That little spring inside keeps everything under pressure (so your coolant doesn’t boil out at the lights on Lake Road). If it’s rusty, crusty, or not sealing tight, swap it out. Job done. You can read more about checking radiator caps here.
7. Watch for Radiator Troubles Early
Lastly — know the warning signs. Steam coming from under the bonnet when you’re driving back to Tamahere from a Saturday sports game. Puddles of bright liquid under the car in your driveway in Nawton. Engine temp just creeping up higher than usual.
Don’t wait — we’ve seen plenty of major dramas avoided just because someone brought in their Mazda Demio early. Here’s a decent article on signs of radiator trouble.
Keep these tips up and you’ll get plenty more years out of your car’s cooling system — and avoid sitting on the side of Hamilton’s ring road waiting for a tow.
