1. Get Yourself a GPS Tracker
One thing we’re seeing more of in the workshop lately – especially for folks commuting along Avalon Drive or parking at The Base – is interest in GPS tracking systems. Whether you drive a Honda Fit, a Suzuki Swift or even something less usual like a Peugeot 3008, you just want to know where your car is when you aren’t in it!
A GPS tracker gives you some real peace of mind. If you ever have your Hyundai Tucson go missing from outside Pak’nSave Te Awamutu or even while you’re at the footy in Cambridge, you can check its location right from your phone. Handy as when the cops ask for info! Some models even let you set a ‘geo-fence’, so you get an alert if someone tries taking your Isuzu Bighorn beyond Glenview. That’s next-level protection for anyone keen on keeping their ride safe.
If you want to read up on GPS tracking and how it could help in Hamilton traffic or those dodgy car parks in Rototuna, check out our article on GPS systems.
2. Upgrade Your Car Alarm – Don’t Rely on Factory Basics
Let’s be honest, some of those older factory alarms (looking at you, Toyota Ipsum and Nissan Cefiro) are more of a suggestion than a deterrent. In the workshop, we’re always seeing people come in after break-ins — parked outside the Chartwell shops or even right in their own driveway in Ngaruawahia.
Modern alarm systems are a game changer. You get shock sensors, so if someone tries jimmying your Mazda Demio’s door or smashing a window, the alarm sounds off quick-smart. A lot of alarms now hook up to your smartphone too – useful when you’re up at The University or ducking into Dinsdale shops. Some even let you remote-start the car on those freezing winter mornings when it’s foggy as along River Road.

3. Security Window Tinting – Not Just for the Looks
We get a lot of questions from customers in Morrinsville and Matangi about window tinting. Some folks think it’s just about blocking that harsh Tamahere sun, but security tints do loads more. We’ve seen it in the workshop: an Audi Q5 with factory glass is much easier to shatter than one with solid security film.
Basically, with proper tint, if someone tries to smash your window – say, at the Rotokauri park’n’ride or outside Riverlea on a dark winter evening – it’s much harder for them to get in. Plus, tints keep your stuff out of sight. Makes your car less of a target, and gives you a bit of privacy on busy Hamilton roads.
There’s also the bonus of your car looking sharp, whether it’s a Corolla or a Skoda Superb. If you want the low-down on security film and all its perks, have a squiz at our window tinting article.
