1. Keep Your Fuel Filter Fresh
Here’s a quick yarn: just last week, a lady in with her Suzuki Swift from Morrinsville was having trouble with hers. Every time she hit the Killarney Road roundabout, her car’d splutter. Turns out, the fuel filter was clogged up with grub and gunk. That stuff restricts fuel flow, meaning your pump has to slog away — sometimes till it packs in completely.
Changing your fuel filter’s one of the easiest ways to keep your fuel pump happy, whether you’re driving a Toyota RAV4, a Honda Fit, or some of those euro wagons like a Volvo V40. Filters get clogged in stop-start traffic, after filling up at dodgy stations, or just from good old NZ gravel roads.

Find the fuel filter (your car manual will tell you where it is — round the engine bay or under the car).

Safely relieve the fuel system pressure (pull a fuse or relay).

2. Don’t Let It Run Low On Fuel
Here’s something you might not think about: that fuel in your tank actually cools and lubricates the pump. If you’re constantly driving between Ngaruawahia and Hamilton with your gauge flashing empty, you’re making that little pump work overtime and risking an expensive breakdown. One of our techs caught this on a late-model Mazda 2 — old mate reckoned she’d got so used to “running on fumes” she forgot what a full tank felt like.

3. Stick With Good Quality Fuel
We see heaps of weird stuff in tanks at the workshop — water, odd chemical smells, you name it. Using rubbish fuel is a sure way to clog up the works, especially on hybrids or late-model Euros (think Peugeot 308s, or those Hyundai Ioniqs popping up all over Hamilton East). Bad fuel makes your pump strain and can ruin injectors.

Always go for known stations around town — don’t risk an off-brand station out in the wops.

If your car’s not made for high ethanol blends, avoid them.

Consider chucking in a fuel system cleaner every so often — especially after rough running or filling up on a road trip.
