If you’ve ever been halfway down Te Rapa Road or sitting in Rototuna traffic and your car decides to chuck an electrical wobbly, you’re not alone. Electrical problems are common as around here as potholes in the suburbs, and a lot of the time it’s nothing too dramatic. We see everything from Suzuki Swifts to VW Golfs to old Honda CR-Vs and even the odd SsangYong Korando turning up with dead batteries or rogue dashboard lights. Whether you’re coming in from Cambridge, Chartwell, or just over from Frankton, here’s a few quick fixes we often share with customers – and yes, plenty of women come in with these same questions, not just the blokes!

1. Flat Battery? Don’t Panic – Try a Jump Start

So, you’re about to head up to Auckland on State Highway 1, but your Toyota Wish just gives you that “click click” – nothing. Classic dead battery. Happens heaps after frosty winter mornings or if the car’s been sitting in the garage for a bit. Sometimes the stop-start traffic on Ulster Street doesn’t help, especially if the alternator’s already had a hard life.

  • Park up safe. Both cars off, handbrakes on – don’t want any accidents outside Countdown in Dinsdale.
  • Cables go: Red to positive on both batteries, black to negative on the donor, and the last black clamp on bare metal (not the battery!) on your ride.
  • Fire up the donor. Let it run, then try your ignition. If she kicks into life, beauty! Give the car a good drive after to recharge (a trip out to Gordonton’s a good idea).

If your battery keeps dying, could be time for a new one or your alternator’s acting up. We can sort those checks at the workshop, or you can read more about battery charging and maintenance if you want to get your head around it.

2. Headlights Gone Dim or Kaput?

Driving through Hamilton Lake in the dark with no headlights? Not fun, and if the local police see you, could ruin your night. This comes up all the time, especially in Euro cars like Citroën C3s or Peugeot 308s. Doesn’t mean you’ve got a big bill coming – sometimes it’s just a blown bulb or a fuse.

  • Swap out the bulb: Switch the car off, pop the hood, unclip the headlight, and stick a new bulb in. We’ve shown heaps of people how to do this out in our carpark on a rainy morning.
  • Check the fuse: If that didn’t work, time to check your fuse box (usually under the dash or bonnet). Blown fuse? Replace it – your handbook will tell you which one.

Some cars are fiddly, though. If DIY doesn’t bring your lights back, try this troubleshooting guide or swing by Grimmer Motors – we sort these every day, especially when that extra WOF check picks up odd headlight faults.

3. Flickering or Dead Dashboard Lights?

Spotted your dash lights flickering like disco lights on Victoria Street? Happens a fair bit in hybrids like Nissan Leafs, or even older Subaru Outbacks after a long, hot Raglan drive. Could be a tired battery or alternator on its last legs after years slugging it out over Hamilton’s speed bumps and potholes.

  • Test the battery: Weak power can trip up your dash. Swap the battery if needed.
  • Suspect the alternator: If the new battery still doesn’t fix it, that alternator might need a look at. Book in for a check if you’re not sure.

If you’re still having dramas after those checks, dash light problems can get weird fast – better to get a pro to scan it. Want more info? Check other reasons out here.

No dramas, just straight-up advice, honest repairs, and real-world experience. Whether it’s a hybrid, diesel ute, or little city hatch, we’ve probably fixed it before.
