Let’s be honest, Hamilton’s a tough spot for brakes — you’ve got some days crawling in Te Rapa traffic, then zipping round potholes in Nawton or up hills to Flagstaff. Brakes cop it all, especially with our gnarly winters and hot summers cooking up the rotors. So if your brakes start acting up, don’t just hope it sorts itself. Here’s three classic brake problems we see all the time at Grimmer Motors, plus some yarns from the workshop so you know you’re not the only one dealing with this stuff.

Squeaking or Squealing Brakes

One of the most common things we hear: “My brakes are making a horrible squeal!” Had a bloke in from Cambridge last week — his Nissan Teana sounded like a cicada every time he came off Ruakura Road. Usually, what you’re hearing is the wear indicators on your brake pads giving you a heads-up they’re nearly worn out.

What to do?

  • Have a look at your brake pads — if there’s less than a quarter inch left, they’re toast. Needs replacing.

  • Stone chips from rough city roads (cheers, Claudelands chip-seal!) can get stuck in between — worth a check if the sound just started suddenly.

  • When we service brakes here, we always lube up the right bits so they stay quiet after.

If you ignore it, you’ll end up needing new rotors too — not just new pads. Our brake pad replacement sort you out before it gets pricey.

Vibrating When Braking

Had a customer from Tamahere with a Peugeot 308 — every time she hit the picks at the lights on Peachgrove Road, the whole steering wheel shook. Classic sign the rotors are warped or uneven. Could be from hard stops, hauling a horse float, or just too many hot/cold cycles over a Hamilton winter.

If your brake pedal or steering’s pulsing under your foot:

  • Get a tech to measure and check if your rotors need machining or replacing.

  • Try not to ride the brakes down Dinsdale hill. Use some engine braking when you can, especially with all our stop-start driving.

  • Stick to regular brake maintenance so you don’t get caught out at a roundabout.

We keep Hamilton rotors smooth with our brake repair service — makes for a way nicer drive, especially on rough roads in Melville or Hillcrest.

Spongy or Soft Brake Pedal

Another thing we hear: “My pedal feels soft, just goes nearly to the floor!” Had this come up last week on a Toyota Mark X from Matangi — she said it felt like the car didn’t want to stop. Usually, there’s air in the brake lines, could be a fluid leak hiding, or sometimes the master cylinder’s given up.

Here’s what needs doing:

  • Bleed the brake lines to get the air out — that usually puts things right.

  • Check underneath for dribbles of brake fluid round the wheels or along the lines.

If you leave it, you could fail your WOF quick-smart and stopping distance is, well — rubbish. Best book in for a brake check to be safe.

Why book with Grimmer Motors for your car service Hamilton way? We see everything: Toyota Aqua from Rototuna, Honda Odysseys from Glenview, Subaru Outbacks from Ngaruawahia, even the odd Skoda Superb or Mazda Atenza. We stick to proper parts, top-up with the right fluids, and work quick so you’re back on the road fast. And we’ll explain any issues in plain English (or a demo in the car park if you want — always happy to show you what’s up!).

Brakes aren’t something to muck around with. If anything feels weird, or sounds off, pop in for a yarn. Your safety’s number one — and we’ll get you sorted, no drama.
