Exhaust Fume Odor in Car – Inspection & Repair in Hamilton

    About exhaust fumes:

    A leaking exhaust

Have you noticed a constant smell of exhaust gases inside your car? Leaking exhaust fumes can be dangerous to your health as well as the health of your exhaust system. For this reason, the cause of the exhaust fumes should be diagnosed and fixed as soon as possible.

Your car’s exhaust system is responsible for processing, filtering and expelling excess fumes from your engine. If the fumes are finding their way into the interior of your car, it is likely that part of your exhaust system has developed a leak, and the fumes are finding their way into your car’s interior cabin.

Since exhaust fumes contain harmful gases, they can often cause drivers to feel unwell or get headaches. Leaking exhaust fumes are also very flammable and can be a fire hazard. For this reason, it is important that the fault in your exhaust system is serviced quickly. If you absolutely have to drive with a leaking exhaust, we recommend that you:

    • Drive with the windows down.
    • Drive conservatively, avoiding revving the engine to high levels.
    • Stop if the smell is becoming more powerful.

Causes of exhaust fumes in cabin:

Exhaust leak – Leaks can occur in any part of your exhaust system. This includes the muffler, tailpipe, catalytic converter or engine exhaust manifold. These leaking fumes will float upwards and find their way into your car’s interior via holes and climate control vents.

Door seals in need of replacement – A worn or cracked door/window seal may cause exhaust fumes to enter your car. In order to prevent this, the seal will need to be replaced.

Faulty catalytic converter – A failing catalytic converter will be unable to break down the chemicals produced by engine combustion. This will often lead to a sulfur-like smell in your car’s cabin. If the catalytic converter is failing, it will need to be completely replaced.
