Thinking about getting the most out of your electric vehicle? You’re not alone — we see all sorts roll through the workshop here in Hamilton. Some are BYDs that mum’s running between school pickups in Rototuna, others are Kias or even a sneaky Renault Zoe from over Morrinsville way. No matter what you’ve got plugged in at home, there’s a couple of real-world tricks to keep your EV running sweet — especially with Hamilton streets, Cambridge commutes, and those frustrating SH3 roadworks. Here’s my top seven, straight from the workshop floor.

1. Drive Smart for More Range

Look, we see it all the time — drivers putting the boot in when leaving the lights around Te Rapa Straight, only to be hitting the chargers at The Base sooner than they hoped. Take it easy. Smooth acceleration and gentle braking (cheers to regenerative braking) can mean the difference between making it home to Tamahere or crawling to the closest rapid charger by Glenview. 2. Keep Up with Software Updates

Even something like a Peugeot e-208 — doesn’t matter if it’s Euro, Korean or Japanese — these EVs run on software just as much as batteries. Had a lady drop her Nissan Leaf in last Friday, struggling with her speedo after an update missed while parked up in Frankton. Always connect your ride to Wi-Fi when you can and say yes to updates. Keeps things smooth and usually adds little features, too. If you want to know why, have a read here: Read about the importance of vehicle software updates.

3. Look After Your Battery – It’s the Heart of the Car

Your EV battery hates Waikato extremes — boiling in the Raglan summer then shivering through frost in Nawton. Park in the shade when you can. Don’t run your charge all the way to zero or fill to 100% every single time. Most folks here try to keep theirs between 20% and 80%. Use timers to charge overnight if you can. More battery tips? 4. Stick to Regular Professional Check-Ups

It’s true, EVs need less work than your classic Commodore, but don’t skip the service. One of our techs caught a dodgy coolant pump on a Hyundai Ioniq before it left a bloke stranded near Cambridge. Battery health, air filters, brakes — all need a look every now and then. If you’re not sure, Find out why regular inspections are crucial.

5. Tyres Matter (Probably More Than You Think)

Short local trips through potholes on Avalon Drive can ruin tyres quick, and low pressures chew through your range. Grab a gauge, check them monthly — or next time you pop in for a WOF Hamilton, ask us. Rotate tyres every 10k or so. If you need the numbers, check manufacturer’s recommended levels or Learn more about tire care.

6. Plan Charging Stops, Especially Outside Hamilton

Heading out to Huntly for footy or out Paeroa way? Map your charging stops before you go. Apps and websites make it easy. Bit of planning and no more range anxiety — you’ll always make it home. Discover charging strategies for EVs.

7. Try Out the Eco Modes

Most EVs, from a Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV to a newer MG4, have “eco” modes. Flick these on for city driving — around Claudelands or Melville, you’ll hardly notice the drop in grunt, but you’ll definitely notice fewer trips to the charger. Understand the benefits of Eco Mode.
