If you can smell sulphur (or “rotten eggs”) coming from your exhaust, then this is a good sign that you have one or more faulty parts that need to be repaired or replaced.

The smell is caused by the small amount of hydrogen sulphide that is within the fuel. Usually, the hydrogen sulphide is converted into sulphur dioxide and is odourless, but sometimes a faulty part will stop this conversion from happening and a horrible sulphur smell will occur.

If you can smell sulphur coming from your exhaust, the best thing to do is to book your car in with your local and experienced mechanics who should inspect all of the likely causes of the problem.

What is Causing the Sulphur Smell Coming From My Exhaust?

Usually, the sulphur smell from your car exhaust is caused by one of these four common problems:

  1. Faulty Catalytic Converter

The first component to check is the catalytic converter. A faulty catalytic converter is the most likely cause of the problem. One purpose of the converter is to convert the hydrogen sulphide in your emissions system into odourless sulphur dioxide. When it becomes faulty it cannot carry out the conversion and a bad smell can occur.

If the catalytic converter is faulty it will need to be replaced. Thankfully, the team at Grimmer Motors can carry out this repair in a fast and cost-effective manner.

  1. Faulty Fuel Pressure Regulator

If the catalytic converter is fine, the next component we will check is the fuel pressure sensor. If the fuel pressure sensor fails it can cause oil to clog up in the catalytic converter and this stops the converter from being able to process the exhaust by-products and sometimes cause it to overheat. When this happens a bad sulphur smell will come out of your exhaust.

If we inspect the pressure regulator and find it is defective, we will replace it. If it is fine, we will check the fuel filter.

  1. Faulty Fuel Filter

The fuel filter can also become defective, and this causes the same problems as a faulty fuel pressure regulator. We will inspect the fuel filter and replace it if it needs to be.

  1. Old Transmission Fluid

If the fuel filter is fine, the next possible cause of the problem is old transmission fluid. When you don’t flush out your transmission enough the fluid can leak into other parts of your engine and cause a sulphur smell to occur.

If you haven’t changed your transmission fluid in a while, the team at Grimmer Motors can replace it for you. Hopefully, this will stop the horrible smell from occurring.
