What is a random misfire code?

Misfires occur when your engine does not burn fuel correctly and misses a process in its combustion cycle. They are usually caused by an imbalance in air-fuel ratio. Your engine needs to maintain ideal levels of correct air and fuel to be able to function optimally. Problems with various engine components can offset this balance, causing misfires to happen.

A random misfire means that there are misfires occurring that are not isolated to just one cylinder. Instead, the misfires happen throughout different cylinders in a “random” way. Random misfiring is usually caused by an incorrect air/fuel mixture or ignition related issue. This means that there is too much or not enough fuel reaching your engine or the engine spark is not always correct .

What causes the P0300 fault code?

Determining that a random misfire is causing your check engine light to come on is only the first step. The next step is determining why your engine is misfiring. Below are some of the most common causes for the random misfire code:

Bad spark plugs or Ignition Coils

The ignition coils or spark plugs are responsible for creating a spark in your engine and igniting the air/fuel mixture. When they begin to fail, they will lose their ability to ignite fuel correctly. This results in non-optimal burning conditions, resulting in multiple misfires across engine cylinders. Other symptoms of bad spark plugs or ignition coils include:

  • Slow acceleration and loss of power
  • Bad fuel economy

Bad fuel injectors

As their name suggests, the fuel injectors are responsible for injecting fuel into your engine where it is ignited by the ignition coils and spark plugs. Over time, these injectors can become clogged with contaminants or damaged. As a result, the total level of fuel reaching the engine is changed, causing an incorrect air/fuel ratio.

Symptoms of damaged or dirty fuel injectors include:
