About the clutch

Clutch repair

In manual vehicles, clutches play a crucial role in transmitting power from the engine to the wheels. The clutch consists of three main components: the clutch disc, pressure plate, and flywheel. When the clutch pedal is pressed, it disengages the clutch, separating the clutch disc from the flywheel. This interrupts the power flow to the wheels, allowing the driver to shift gears without stalling the engine.

Releasing the clutch pedal gradually reengages the clutch, allowing power to transfer from the engine to the wheels smoothly. The clutch mechanism relies on friction between the clutch disc and flywheel, controlled by the pressure plate, to transmit power efficiently.

Why is my clutch making more noise than normal?

Clutch noise is usually caused by a worn or damaged clutch component. Like all moving parts, the clutch can wear over time. Incorrect use of the clutch can significantly increase the wearing of your clutch components, therefore we suggest that you use the clutch sensibly.

Below are some common problems that can cause noise to come from your clutch:

Worn clutch thrust bearing

The clutch thrust bearing pushes against your clutch when the pedal is pressed down. This causes the clutch to disengage. It is controlled by the clutch fork/arm. A worn clutch bearing can reduce the effectiveness of your clutch system, meaning it will be harder for your vehicle to change gears or stay in gear.

This bearing is the most common cause of clutch noises. It can become worn over time, producing a rattling or squeaking noise. This noise will be most obvious when the clutch pedal is pressed down.

Damaged or worn clutch disc

The clutch disc, located between the flywheel and the pressure plate, can develop damage or wear over time. When the clutch disc wears unevenly or becomes warped, it can cause vibration and noise when engaging or disengaging the clutch.

Worn clutch pressure plate

The clutch pressure plate pushes against the clutch disc, allowing it to make contact with the flywheel. High levels of friction can cause the pressure plate to warp or bend. This often results in a shaking or chattering noise coming from your transmission.

A damaged pressure plate may not be able to apply even pressure to the clutch disc. This can cause your clutch to slip and struggle to change gears.

Clutch cable issues

If the clutch cable is misadjusted or worn, it can cause noise when operating the clutch pedal. Similarly, in vehicles with a hydraulic clutch system, issues such as low fluid levels, air in the system, or a malfunctioning master or slave cylinder can result in noise during clutch engagement.

Clutch pedal in need of lubrication

The clutch system relies on proper lubrication to function smoothly. If there is a lack of lubrication or if the lubricant becomes contaminated, it can lead to increased friction and noise. This can occur due to issues with the release bearing or inadequate lubrication of the clutch fork or pivot points.
