About CV joints:cv-small

The Constant Velocity (CV) joints are an important part of the steering system on all front-wheel drive cars. The inner CV joints connect the driveshaft to the transmission, while the outer CV joints connect the driveshaft to the wheels. These joints allow for a correct and constant transfer of torque between the transmission and the wheels.

It is important that the CV joints remain in good condition. A damaged CV joint can lead to dangerous operation of your vehicle as it reduces the control you have over your steering.

More about how CV joints work >

Causes of clicking noise when turning:

A loud clicking noise when turning left or right can usually be attributed to a faulty CV joint. Your car’s CV joints are covered with grease and enclosed in protective boots. If this boot breaks, grease will leak out and the CV joint will become unlubricated. This causes increased wear on the component and eventual failure.

A worn outer CV joint will produce loud clicking noises when you turn sharply. Usually, this noise will increase with acceleration. A worn inner CV joint can cause loud clunking noises when switching between drive and reverse.

Causes of other noises while turning:

  • A loud whining noise can often be attributed to a problem with your car’s power steering system.
  • A creaking noise while turning can be caused by damage to suspension components such as the suspension bushings, struts/shocks and ball joints.
  • loud grinding noise while driving is often caused be wheel bearings that are due for replacement.

Is your CV joint leaking?

With prolonged use, the CV boot can dry out which results in tears and cracks. Once this happens, it will begin to leak. The most common sign of this is grease leaking around the front wheels of your vehicle. When you drive with a leaking CV joint, it will deteriorate more, increasing the risk of the joint failing entirely.

Other signs of a leaking CV joint are the symptoms listed above.

Can you drive with a worn or leaking CV joint?

A severely worn CV joint can fail or fall apart while you are driving. When this happens, the vehicle becomes much more difficult to control. This can result in a loss of control or accident. For this reason, we recommend that you don’t drive with a damaged or worn CV joint.
