What do wheel bearings do?

The contact surface between the wheel’s center (hub) and the axle is subject to large amounts of friction as the two parts rub against each other.  The purpose of a wheel bearing is to help the wheel spin with as little friction as possible.

Wheel bearings support the weight of the vehicle and enable the wheels to rotate at high speeds with minimal friction. They are subjected to significant forces and stresses, including vertical and lateral forces from the vehicle’s weight and cornering forces, as well as constant vibrations from the road. Wheel bearings are also exposed to dirt, dust, moisture, and other contaminants that can cause them to wear out over time.

Why are wheel bearings important?

Wheel bearings allow for a smoother, quieter ride. However, not getting them fixed can lead to more problems. If the wheel bearing completely fails you run the risk of the entire wheel becoming unattached while you are driving. This is obviously a serious safety issue, especially when driving at higher speeds.

Damaged / worn wheel bearings can also affect your car’s steering or cause your car’s tyres to wear more quickly.

Symptoms of wheel bearings in need of replacement:

Below are some common symptoms associated with a damaged wheel bearing:

  • Loud noise from wheels – The most common symptom of a bad car wheel bearing is a grinding noise coming from your car’s wheel. This noise will often become louder when you are driving at higher speeds.
  • Vibrations while driving – A worn wheel bearing can cause vibrations in the steering wheel or the vehicle’s body, especially at high speeds.
  • Car pulls to one side – With a faulty car wheel bearing, you may notice that your car pulls to the left/right when the brakes are applied.
  • Shaky or unresponsive steering – A loose car wheel bearing can affect your car’s steering. The car steering wheel may shake or feel less responsive than normal. This can be dangerous because it can limit the control you have over your vehicle.
  • Uneven wear on tyres and brake rotors/pads – A bad car wheel bearing can cause your tyres and brake components to wear more quickly, meaning that you will end up spending more on replacements over time.
  • Reduced brake functionality – A damaged wheel bearing can cause the brake system to malfunction, resulting in longer stopping distances or reduced brake performance.

If you notice any of these symptoms, it is essential to have your vehicle inspected by a qualified mechanic to determine if the wheel bearings need to be replaced.
