All modern engines use coolant in order to control engine temperatures and reduce the risk of overheating. The water pump ensures that your car doesn’t overheat by moving the coolant, maintaining a constant flow from the radiator, into the engine and back to the radiator again. 

Without the water pump, the coolant just sits in the radiator. This prevents your engine from receiving the cooling it needs, resulting in overheating and potential engine damage. For this reason, it is important that the water pump is replaced if it fails. 

The water pump is often found underneath your car’s timing belt (or cambelt). This makes it particularly difficult to replace. For this reason, the water pump is usually replaced alongside the timing belt (usually at every 100,000 km).

Causes of a failing water pump:

Wear over time – Although the water pump is designed to last for a very long time, it can be prone to wear and damage, causing no coolant to reach your engine. An old water pump that has never been replaced will be more prone to failure. For this reason, we recommend getting the water pump replaced alongside the cambelt.

Failed drive belt – The drive belt (or serpentine belt) provides power to a variety of components in your car including the water pump. If it stops working, your water pump will not be able to function.
What does the drive belt do?

Dry running – A water pump that is running on an insufficient amount of coolant lacks the lubrication needed to keep the seals functioning properly. This will cause the seals to wear quickly and leak.

Cooling System Corrosion – if the water in your cooling system becomes rusty or has the wrong PH level then then impeller on the engines water pump can become corroded and in extreme cases can can wear away or completely come off.

 

Symptoms of a failing water pump:

Overheating engine – A malfunctioning or broken water pump will prevent coolant from circulating around your engine. This will lead to overheating. Driving with high engine temperatures can cause serious damage to occur. For this reason, it is recommended that you pull over if the engine’s temperature is too high.

Coolant leaks – If the gaskets or seals become loose, the coolant can leak from the water pump. This will result in a puddle of liquid appearing under your vehicle. Coolant is typically bright green, yellow, red or blue. 

Lack of coolant flow – if the water pump impeller fails or is not being driven correctly, then you will often see than when the engines cooling system thermostat opens that there is no water flow in the top radiator tank. This can cause the engine to rapidly overheat, which can be very expensive to repair if the cylinder head gasket blows.
