What do coil springs do?

Located underneath your car, coil springs (or car suspensions springs) are made with wide gap coils that compress to absorb impacts when your car is driving over rough, bumpy or uneven surfaces. This maximises your car’s contact with the ground, allowing you to have much more control over bumps and cornering.

Coil springs give you a smoother, more comfortable driving experience. They also decrease wear on surrounding components and tyres.

It is important that your car’s coil springs are kept in good condition alongside the struts, shocks, bushings, sway bar links, and the rest of your car’s suspension system. This is because suspension-related issues can affect your car’s ability to absorb bumps, drive smoothly and pass a Warrant of Fitness (WOF).

Symptoms of coil spring damage:

When coil springs in a vehicle become damaged, there are several symptoms that may indicate their compromised condition. Here are common signs of coil spring damage:

  1. Car leaning to one side/corner: If a coil spring breaks or becomes worn, it can cause uneven suspension height on the affected side of the vehicle. You may notice that one corner of the vehicle appears lower or higher than the others, indicating a potential issue with the coil spring.
  2. Excessive Vehicle Bouncing: Damaged coil springs can lead to excessive bouncing or oscillation of the vehicle, especially when driving over bumps or uneven surfaces. The compromised springs may not provide sufficient support and absorb shocks as intended, resulting in a bouncy or unstable ride.
  3. Suspension Noise: When coil springs are damaged, they may produce noise while driving. You might hear rattling, clunking, or squeaking sounds from the suspension area. These noises can occur during vehicle movement, especially when going over bumps or turning.
  4. Tyre Wear Irregularities: Worn or damaged coil springs can affect wheel alignment and cause uneven tyre wear. If you notice uneven tread wear patterns on your tyres, particularly on one side of the vehicle, it could indicate a problem with the coil springs.
  5. Vehicle Leaning or Tilting: When coil springs become damaged, they can cause the vehicle to lean or tilt to one side. This uneven suspension height may be noticeable when looking at the vehicle from the front or rear.
  6. Car “nosediving” and hitting the ground: Weak car suspension coil springs can cause your car to “bottom out” over bumps or for the car chassis / body to hit the wheels or make contact with the ground while braking heavily. This can result in damage to important suspension, engine and transmission components located under the vehicle.

How important is a car are new coil / suspension springs?

Correctly working car coil springs are vital to your car’s ability to absorb bumps. They allow for a smoother, less bumpy ride.

If your car’s coil springs are not working correctly, the car may make contact with the ground more often. This can cause serious damage to other suspension, engine and transmission components. For this reason, we recommend that you have them replaced sooner rather than later, because as more damage is caused, the cost of repair will go up.

Benefits of Coil Spring Replacement:

  • Better Suspension Performance: Replacing worn or damaged coil springs restores the proper support and functionality of the suspension system. This results in improved handling, stability, and overall ride quality.
  • Enhanced Safety: Damaged or worn coil springs can compromise the vehicle’s handling and stability, negatively impacting safety. By replacing them, you ensure that the suspension system can properly absorb bumps, maintain tire contact with the road, and provide optimal control during maneuvers.
  • Improved Comfort: New coil springs help provide a smoother and more comfortable ride. They absorb road imperfections better, reducing vibrations, harshness, and excessive bouncing or jolting.
  • Improved Tyre Lifespan: Worn coil springs can cause misalignment, leading to uneven tire wear and reduced tire lifespan. By replacing them, you restore proper alignment, promoting even tire contact with the road and extending tire longevity.
  • Extended Suspension Component Lifespan: Replacing worn coil springs can help prevent premature wear and damage to other suspension components. By providing proper support, the new springs reduce stress on components such as shocks, struts, and control arms, prolonging their lifespan.
