What is electronic stability control?

Electronic stability control (ESC) is a safety feature in modern vehicles that reduces the loss of traction when going around sharp corners or driving in the rain. This allows for improved vehicle control and a reduced risk of accidents.

When the vehicle detects a loss of traction, the brakes will automatically be applied, helping the vehicle to stay on its correct path. The electronic stability control uses your vehicles ABS and traction sensors to detect wheel movement. The throttle can also be controlled to automatically reduce engine rpm and car speed.

Unlike the ABS system, the electronic stability control is active at all times. This allows for the car to react quickly to a loss of traction without you needing to apply the brakes.

Causes of electronic stability control faults:

Faulty wheel speed sensor – The ABS sensors monitor the speed of each wheel. This is how the system determines which brakes should be applied. A faulty speed sensor will result in your Electronic Stability Control / ESC and ABS systems not working correctly.

Faulty traction control module – The traction control module is a small computer that determines when the wheel brakes should be applied. It connects to the speed sensors, constantly monitoring them to prevent loss of traction.

Faulty wiring or fuses – If electricity is not reaching the control module or sensors correctly, the Electronic Stability Control / ESC system will not be able to operate. This is often caused by damaged wiring or a blown fuse.

Symptoms of electronic stability control problems:

Electronic Stability Control System / ESC light on -The electronic stability control light will illuminate when the car is unable to keep traction. If you see this light you should take care while driving, especially when turning sharp corners.,

Slippery driving – Your car’s steering may feel less responsive, especially when turning sharply. When this happens, be sure to take turns slowly. This will help you to keep control of your vehicle.

Faulty ABS system/ABS light – Since the Electronic Stability Control System (ESC) system often uses ABS components, a faulty ABS system will often play a role in its failure. If the ABS light is on, there is likely a problem with your speed sensors, control module, ABS pump or relay.

How important is Electronic Stability Control System (ESC) inspection or replacement?

Electronic stability control will help you when driving in slippery, rainy or snowy conditions. If you plan on driving in dangerous weather, you will be a lot safer with a functioning electronic stability control system.

A correctly functioning Electronic Stability Control System is mandatory to pass a Warrant of Fitness / WOF, and you can be fined by the police if caught driving with the light on. With all these factors we recommend that get your Electronic Stability Control System (ESC) fixed as soon as the light stays on the dash, or your suspect a problem.
