What does the dual mass flywheel do?

A Dual Mass Flywheel (DMF) is an energy storage device in manual transmissions. The main purpose of a dual mass flywheel is to dampen the vibrations and sound created by combustion engines when they are starting and changing gears, and when the clutch is used.

In addition to its vibration dampening and noise reduction functions, the DMF can also help to improve the lifespan of other components in the clutch system. By reducing the stress on the clutch and other components, the DMF helps to extend their lifespan and reduce the need for costly repairs.

Dual Mass Flywheels are especially helpful in multi cylinder engines which vibrate a lot more. This helps to make a ride smoother and protect the gear box at the same time. A Dual Mass Flywheel consists of two Flywheels joined via a bearing and springs to help with lowering the engine noise and vibration.

If you suspect that your dual mass flywheel is damaged, it is important to have your vehicle inspected by a professional as soon as possible. Driving with a damaged dual mass flywheel can cause additional damage and may even result in the need for a costly transmission rebuild.

Symptoms of a Damaged Dual Mass Flywheel:

A damaged dual mass flywheel can cause a variety of symptoms that may indicate a problem with your vehicle. Some common symptoms of a damaged dual mass flywheel include:

  • Clutch slipping – If you find that you are struggling to change gears or if you are slipping out of gear, it could because of your dual mass flywheel. This could be a safety issue or could damage other parts such as the crank shaft or clutch.
  • Clutch Drag:  The opposite to gear slippage. If you find you’re gears are not changing properly, For example, you can’t engage first gear, it is possible that the flywheel is damaged.
  • Burning Smell – If you smell a burning smell, it could be due excessive heat of the flywheel. This could be because of wear and tear or “riding the clutch”. This is when you use the clutch pedal with the accelerator pedal to control your speed or to slow down. If you’re worried about burning smells in or around you’re car it could also be due to your clutch slipping.

  • Engine Vibrations – A damaged dual mass flywheel can cause significant engine vibration, especially when the clutch is engaged. This can be felt through the entire vehicle and may make it difficult to drive smoothly.
  • Clutch Vibrations – If you experience vibration in the clutch pedal or floor of your car it may be because of a damaged Dual Mass Flywheel. The Flywheel may not be dampening the vibrations properly.

Can you drive with a damaged dual mass flywheel?

Driving with a damaged dual mass flywheel is not recommended and can cause additional damage to your vehicle. A damaged dual mass flywheel can lead to a variety of problems, including slipping clutch, engine vibration, difficulty shifting gears, and grinding or rattling noises.

Additionally, a damaged dual mass flywheel can put additional stress on the clutch and other components in the drivetrain, potentially leading to more serious problems and costly repairs.
