Causes of diesel fuel injector damage:
Diesel fuel Injector leaking – If a diesel fuel injector develops a leak in the combustion chamber, it can leak a small amount of diesel fuel into its corresponding cylinder making that cylinder run rich. This can cause reduced engine power, increase fuel consumption (due to excess fuel leaking out) and increase exhaust emissions.
Blocked injector – Fuel system debris or rust can block the fuel injector’s nozzle, reducing the amount of fuel that can enter the engine. This can make the diesel engine run lean or if no diesel fuel is injected, misfire or have one or more cylinders down.
Excess fuel injection – In some cases, a faulty fuel injector can become stuck open, causing too much fuel to enter the engine. This results in higher fuel consumption as well as black smoke coming from your exhaust.
Petrol in diesel tank – If you accidentally put petrol in a diesel vehicle, the fuel system and fuel injectors can become damaged.
Symptoms of diesel fuel injector problems
Common symptoms of a faulty diesel fuel injector include:
- Increased diesel fuel use
- Loss of diesel engine power
- Engine not running on all cylinders (requires an Idle Cylinder Balance Test)
- Rough idling and poor diesel engine performance
- The diesel engine does not reach full RPM expected
