What does your car’s suspension do?suspension

The purpose of your car’s suspension is to maximise contact between your car’s wheels and the road. This allows for improved control, stability and comfort for you and your passengers. Every road you drive down is different. Some are smooth, whereas others have bumps, dips or inconsistencies. For this reason, it is important that your car has a functional suspension system to absorb these inconsistencies.

Your car’s suspension system consists of several important components. These include the shock absorbers, springs, bushings, bearings and joints. Your suspension system connects to your transmission / drive axle system, which transfers the rotational energy from the engine into the power that moves your wheels.

Learn more about how the suspension works

Problems with any of the suspension components can lead to an unstable, unsafe and bumpy ride. For this reason, it is recommended that you get your car’s suspension repaired as soon as you notice an issue.

Please note: if any components of your car suspension a worn out or faulty they will fail a Warrant of Fitness and need to be repaired.

Symptoms of a faulty suspension system:

Car feels bouncier

If you are feeling every bump on the road, it may be due to a defective suspension component. This can be caused by the following problems:

  • Worn shock absorbers – As their name suggests, the shock absorbers are responsible for absorbing shocks and impacts on the road. Worn shock absorbers will often be unable to keep your tyres on the road. This will lead to increased bumpiness when driving, especially on bumpy, uneven terrains.
  • Damaged coil springs – Coil Springs are used to assist the shock absorbers in improving your car’s stability. When they wear and break, your car will not be able to absorb bumps as effectively.

If you think that your car has damaged shock absorbers or coil springs, you can use a simple test to determine if there is a problem. Firstly, put all your weight onto the front of your car. Upon releasing your weight, take note as to how much the car bounces. If it bounces up and down over three times, the suspension is likely to be faulty.

Car nose-dives or leans back

If you notice that your car leans or pulls a certain way due to momentum or acceleration, a suspension fault is the most likely cause.  This is most commonly caused due to shock absorbers or struts needing replacement.

Car leaning to one side

You may notice that your car appears to sit unevenly and lean to one side or corner. This is most commonly caused by worn suspension springs or other suspension components.

Uneven tyre wear

When your car is leaning to one side due to a faulty suspension system, more weight will be placed on the tyres. This will result in them wearing more quickly and needing replacement sooner
