Why is the spare tyre important?

If you have ever experienced a flat tyre while you are driving, you will know how important it is that you have a working spare tyre handy. A spare tyre can be used to replace the flat tyre, allowing you to continue your drive.

It is important that you replace your spare tyre once it has been used to replace a flat/punctured tyre. This is because you never know when you might need it again. Having a suitable spare tyre can save you the expenses and hassle of getting a new tyre when your current one goes flat.

Performing maintenance on your spare tyre:

What many people don’t know is that the spare tyre can lose effectiveness, even when it is not in use. This is because tyre rubber can degrade over time and the air can slowly leak out of the spare tyre, whcih may mean it is partially flat when you go to use it. A spare tyre check can determine the condition of the spare tyre and its air pressure, where the spare tyre can be pumped up or replaced if necessary.

Not using your spare tyre can also lead to uneven tread depth. For this reason, we recommend that you swap your spare tyre with an in-use tyre whenever a tyre rotation is performed.

Please note: To be legally used on the road, your spare tyre must have at least the minimum legal tread depth across the entire tyre, and be able to pass a Warrant of Fitness (WOF). If you fit a spare tyre with less than the legal tread depth then you are putting yourself, your passengers (as well as other motorist at risk) and could be find by the police if caught.

Below are some of the things you should do to improve the lifespan of your spare tyre:

  • Check the air pressure: It is important to check the air pressure of your spare tire regularly to ensure that it is properly inflated. The recommended air pressure can usually be found on the tire itself or in your vehicle’s owner’s manual.
  • Rotate the spare tire: If your vehicle uses a full-size spare tire, it is recommended to include it in your regular tire rotation schedule to ensure even wear and tear. This can help to prolong the life of your spare tire.
  • Store the spare tire properly: Make sure to store your spare tire in a cool, dry place and away from direct sunlight. Exposure to extreme temperatures and UV rays can cause the tire to degrade and potentially fail when it is needed.

Tyre rotation services:

If you have a spare tyre, we recommend that you recommend it in routine tyre rotations.

Tyre rotations involve moving the tyres from one position to another, typically from the front to the back or vice versa. This helps to ensure that all tyres wear evenly, as the front tyres tend to wear more quickly due to steering and braking forces. Regular tyre rotations can help to extend the life of your tyres and improve their overall performance.
