About power steering fluid leaks:

Power steering fluid leak

A power steering fluid leak.

In your car’s power steering system, the car’s power steering pump pushes power steering fluid from a reservoir to the steering box via a belt and pulley. As you turn the steering wheel, this pressurized power steering fluid is allowed to flow into a piston that gives an additional push to move the steering in the desired direction.

Power steering fluid levels should be checked routinely. This prevents the fluid from depleting without you knowing, Power steering fluid should also be replaced once every 70,000 km. Leaks in your car’s power steering system can prevent the power steering system from working correctly. This usually results in a stiffer, more difficult to turn steering wheel.

How does power steering work?

What causes power steering fluid leaks?

Power steering fluid leaks can be caused by several factors, including:

  • Worn or damaged seals: Over time, the seals around the power steering components can become brittle, crack, or wear out, causing fluid to leak.
  • Loose or damaged hoses: Hoses that are not properly secured or that have been damaged can cause fluid to leak.
  • Damaged power steering pump: The power steering pump can develop cracks or leaks over time, causing fluid to escape.
  • Contaminated power steering fluid: Power steering fluid can become contaminated with dirt or debris, which can cause damage to seals and other components, leading to leaks.
  • Age and corrosion: Power steering systems that are not properly maintained or that have been exposed to harsh elements such as salt or road debris can develop leaks due to age and corrosion.

Symptoms of a power steering fluid leak:

  • Noisy steering – If your steering wheel is producing noise when it is turned, check the power steering levels in your car.  These noises will be the most noticeable when driving slowly.
  • Difficult to turn the steering wheel – As your power steering system loses fluid, it will work less effectively. This will make it harder to turn your car’s steering wheel. Your steering wheel may also jerk or move unpredictably when you are driving at slow speeds.
  • Visible puddles under vehicle – If you notice a puddle forming under your car, it means that fluid or oil is leaking from your car. This could be power steering fluid, coolant, petrol or oil.
