Grimmer Motors no longer does Emission Testing, but can do vehicle emission-related diagnosis and parts replacement

About emissions testing:

engine-light

The check engine light is often linked to high exhaust emissions.

Every car produces emissions. These emissions are created via the burning of fuel, which exits your car through the exhaust. In New Zealand, there are regulations in place to prevent excess emissions from exiting your car and polluting the air. This means that if your car is producing an irregular amount of exhaust emissions, it may fail its Warrant of Fitness.

High emissions are often linked to an incorrect air/fuel ratio in your engine. If too much fuel is entering your engine, it won’t burn properly and it will leave your exhaust as black smoke. As well as creating high emissions, this can also lead to increased fuel consumption, dashboard warning lights, and in some cases, misfires and increased wear on your engine.

Causes of high vehicle emissions:Emissions Testing Hamilton

Problems in your engine and exhaust system can lead to your car producing a high amount of exhaust emissions. These problems will usually need to be fixed before your car can pass its Warrant of Fitness. Common causes include:

  • Malfunctioning oxygen sensor: The oxygen sensor is responsible for measuring the amount of oxygen in your car’s exhaust system. If the sensor is malfunctioning, it can cause your car to burn too much fuel, resulting in higher emissions and a failed emissions test.
    Oxygen sensor replacement
  • Faulty catalytic converter: The catalytic converter is responsible for converting harmful pollutants in the exhaust into less harmful emissions. If the catalytic converter is not functioning properly, it can cause your car to produce higher levels of pollutants, resulting in a failed emissions test.
    Catalytic converter replacement
  • Dirty air filter: A dirty air filter can restrict the airflow to your car’s engine, causing it to burn more fuel and produce more emissions. If your air filter is dirty, it can cause your car to fail an emissions test.
  • Defective ignition system: The ignition system is responsible for providing the spark that ignites the fuel in your car’s engine. If the system is not functioning properly, it can cause your car to burn too much fuel, resulting in higher emissions and a failed emissions test.
  • Leaking exhaust system: A leaking exhaust system can cause pollutants to escape before they reach the catalytic converter, resulting in higher emissions and a failed emissions test.
  • Bad fuel injectors: Fuel injectors are responsible for delivering fuel to the engine. If they are not functioning properly, they can cause your car to burn too much fuel, resulting in higher emissions and a failed emissions test.
    Fuel injector replacement
  • Worn-out spark plugs: Spark plugs are responsible for igniting the fuel in the engine. If they are worn out, they can cause your car to burn more fuel, resulting in higher emissions and a failed emissions test.
