About car air conditioning:

Your car’s air conditioning system consists of a variety of components that work together and produce cold, hot, or dehumidified air. Damage to any of the components can prevent cold, hot, or dehumidified air from coming out through the vents and into your car’s interior.

Inside the air conditioning system, a compressor applies pressure to the refrigerant. Air then passes through the refrigerant where it is cooled down according to your climate control system’s selected temperature. This air is then sent out through your car’s air vents into the interior. This entire process is often controlled by a computer which adjusts levels according to the temperature you have selected.

The air conditioning system shares components with the car’s heater. This means that if a problem occurs in the blower motor, fan or hoses, the heater will not work either.

Causes of faulty car air conditioning:

Compressor problems – The compressor is a crucial component of the air conditioning system that pressurizes and circulates the refrigerant. If the compressor fails, it can result in a lack of cooling. Common causes of compressor issues include electrical problems, worn-out bearings, or a seized compressor clutch.

Blocked or Dirty Condenser – The condenser, located in front of the radiator, releases heat from the refrigerant. If the condenser becomes clogged with debris, dirt, or bugs, it can obstruct airflow and hinder the cooling process. This can result in inadequate cooling or an increase in operating pressures, potentially causing system failure.

Malfunctioning fans – Cooled air is pushed into the car’s interior through a fan and blower motor. If the fan or motor fails, no air will come through. In this case, the heater will not work either.

Leaking – The air conditioning system relies on refrigerant to cool the air. If there is a leak in the system, the refrigerant level may drop, leading to poor cooling performance or a complete failure of the air conditioning. Leaks can occur in various components, such as hoses, O-rings, seals, or the condenser.

Electrical problems – Electrical faults, such as a blown fuse, faulty relay, or wiring issues, can prevent the air conditioning system from functioning properly. These problems can disrupt the power supply to various components, leading to a loss of cooling.

Overheating / underheating – If an insufficient amount of refrigerant flows, the evaporator can overheat. Alternatively, too much refrigerant can cause it to freeze.

These are some of the common causes of faulty car air conditioning. Diagnosing air conditioning issues can be difficult. For this reason, we offer advanced air conditioning diagnostics and fixes. Contact our workshop to book a repair.

Air Conditioning Maintenance Tips

Why is my car’s air conditioning not blowing air?

If your car’s air conditioning is not blowing any air, it could be due to the following reasons:

  • Blower Motor Failure: The blower motor responsible for pushing air into the cabin may have failed and needs replacement.
  • Blower Motor Resistor Failure: A faulty blower motor resistor can prevent the blower motor from working or functioning only at certain speeds. Replacing the resistor usually solves this issue.
  • Electrical Problems: Faulty wiring, blown fuses, or a malfunctioning relay can disrupt the power supply to the blower motor, causing it not to work. Checking and replacing damaged electrical components may be necessary.
  • Control Panel Issues: Malfunctions in the control panel or climate control module can prevent the blower motor from operating properly. This could be due to a faulty switch, sensor, or circuitry. Professional diagnosis and repair may be required.
  • Blower Motor Fan or Fan Belt Problems: A damaged or obstructed blower motor fan or a broken/loose fan belt can prevent the blower motor from functioning. Inspection and repair or replacement of these components may be necessary.

Why is my car’s air conditioning only blowing hot air?

If your car’s air conditioning is only blowing hot air, the issue could be caused by:

  • Low Refrigerant: Insufficient refrigerant levels can prevent the air conditioning system from producing cold air. Leaks in the system or improper refrigerant charging may be the cause.
  • Compressor Issues: A faulty compressor may not properly circulate the refrigerant, resulting in a lack of cooling. This could be due to a worn-out clutch, electrical problems, or compressor failure.
  • Clogged Condenser: A blocked or dirty condenser can hinder heat dissipation, preventing the refrigerant from cooling down properly. Debris, dirt, or bugs can accumulate on the condenser and restrict airflow.
