Since car manufacturers stopped using glass for headlights and switched to plastics, drivers have faced cloudy headlights. This is caused by oxidation. When your headlights become too cloudy, they will affect your ability to see at night and reduce your visibility to other vehicles. This can stop you getting a Warrant or Fitness. Fortunately, you can fix cloudy headlights with just a few common household items.

Cleaning headlights with toothpaste:

What you will need:

  • An old rag or towel.
  • A bucket of water.
  • Toothpaste.

But why would you clean your headlights with toothpaste? Because toothpaste contains an abrasive that strips surfaces of chemicals and contaminants. Toothpaste will remove oxidation, road debris and small particles from your headlights the same way it removes bacteria from the enamel of our teeth.

Add a generous amount of toothpaste to your rag. Add a small amount of water to the rag to assist in spreading the mixture. Scrub the headlight with the rag and watch as all of the grime comes off. Repeat until you headlights are looking clear again. Rinse with water to remove the mixture from your headlight.

If this does not remove fogginess from the headlight, it may due to oxidation on the inside of the light. In this case, you should inquire about getting the lights professionally repaired.

Cleaning headlights with baking soda and vinegar:

What you will need:

  • Baking soda .
  • Vinegar.
  • Dish-washing liquid or soap.
  • Water.
  • A small bucket.

Everyone knows that baking soda and vinegar cause a chemical reaction, but not many people realise that the effects of this reaction can be used to clean your headlights.

Start by mixing dish-washing liquid with water and applying the foam to your headlights with a rag. Next, add baking soda and vinegar into a small bucket. You will notice that the two ingredients will immediately react with each other. Apply the mixture to your headlights and watch as the reaction easily removes grime and oxidation from the front of the lights. Finally, rinse the solution off using water.
